A simple "Thank you" will do.

February 13, 2011

I'm not sure if men do this or not, but women, when confronted with a compliment, will jump through hoops to explain how it is they come to have such a beautiful sweater, or swear that it was nothing to get up at the crack of dawn to start preparing Thanksgiving dinner. Why can't we just say "Thank you."? I know I'm not the only one who does this because when it comes up in conversation, all women present atdmit to doing the same thing. What's with the need to qualify why we deserve to have nice things said about us? I'm familiar with that old adage "Don't toot your own horn." but I would hope we have enough presence to receive it from someone else.

I'm sure there's a bigger issue here and I'm going to have to put it on simmer because I'll be darned if I know what it is off the top of my head. Maybe we don't like the attention being focused on us. Or maybe those busy body voices in our head won't allow us to truly hear something nice about us. Or maybe it's simply a habit that we can choose to change. The next time I get a compliment, I will endeavor to simply say "Thank you."
