A mole hill out of a mountain

October 24, 2011

How many plastic bags do you have in your house? You know, the ones you get at the grocery store and Target and Walgreens and on and on and on. They do come in very handy for things like garbage can liners. Sometimes it's hard to believe that we got along without them. The only problem is, they seem to multiply like rabbits! If we aren't careful, they begin to overrun closets and cupboards. What's a consumer to do?!

I've discovered the magic words that have freed me from the plastic bag invasion......

"I don't need a bag."

I know it sounds crazy, the idea of walking out of a store carrying your purchase instead of holding onto those two, thin plastic handles. But it really does work! I have cut down on the number of bags that come into the house by at least 60%. Now I use them up at about the same rate that they come into the house. It's finally a nice balance. I actually left the grocery store today with three cans of cat food and no bag. I no longer rail against the gods of modern living because I can't find my extra paper towels due to all the plastic. It feels good to take some amount of control back.

If you find yourself being overrun with bags, simply say the magic words: "I don't need a bag." and feel your power returning. No wand required.
